Introduction: Li Ka-Shing, the richest man in Asia in February 2004, and owner of two major business houses, Hutchison Whampoa and Cheung Kong (Holdings), is popularly known as ‘Superman Li’(ChuiYan) for his daring investments, eye for detail and ability to tap potential opportunities. He is ranked 19th in the Forbesworld richest people 2004 and 28th in 2003 and is known for the political influence he enjoys and the global reach of his business houses. Starting his career as a floor wiper, manufacturer of plastic flowers and later a real estate investor, he expanded his business to become a leading player in most of the business sectors in China and Hong Kong. His business interests include real estate, hotels, telecommunications, retailing, container port, investment banking, e-commerce, media and biotechnology . By 2004, already in his 70s, Li Ka-Shing, the ubiquitous businessman is bold and ambitious enough to bid for licences for 3G (third-generation cell phone services) telecommunications and such other large investments, when most of the other major players in the market are hesitant.

Li Ka-Shing is not only good at deal making through personal relationships (Guanxi), but is also known for cashing in on technological revolutions across the globe, as and when they happen. He identifies good deals and quickly moves away from the bad ones.
